Lachlan Dent holds a PhD (Music Performance) from Monash University, focused on the application to performance of the pedagogy of Evangeline Benedetti, cellist with the New York Philharmonic (1967-2011) and Christopher Bunting, author of Essay on the Craft of Cello Playing. Lachlan also holds a Master of Music (Performance) from the University of Melbourne, as well as Licentiate Diplomas in performance from the Australian Music Examinations Board (LMusA) and the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (LRSM). His playing has been broadcast on ABC Classic FM and 3MBS in Australia, and is currently available to purchase from Move Records and iTunes. In addition to studying with Ms. Benedetti in New York City, Lachlan has studied with current and former members of the London Symphony Orchestra, Australian Chamber Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra of Europe, and Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Lachlan made his New York debut with the Ensemble for the Romantic Century in 2012, performing with prominent musicians Stephanie Chase (violin) and Max Barros (piano). He has performed and taught in Malaysia as a guest of Universiti Teknologi MARA. Similarly, he has been a member of the faculty of the Festival Eleazar de Carvalho in Brazil. In Melbourne and Canberra, Lachlan has given recitals with staff from the University of Melbourne and Monash University. He is a casual (substitute) cellist for the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. In 2018, Lachlan presented a recital and masterclass at the University of Auckland. Lachlan has guest lectured and taught cello at Monash University, been a cello tutor at Janet Clarke Hall (The University of Melbourne), been a music tutor at University College (The University of Melbourne), and taught cello at several high schools and primary schools. He has also appeared as an associate artist for Master of Music (Performance) candidates at the University of Melbourne and Monash University. Lachlan presented some of his latest research, titled 'Discovering Your Own Technique: A Practicing Process Based on the Instrument, Your Body, and You' at the International Society for Music Education's 2016 conference in Glasgow, Scotland. His article 'Co-ordination in Cello Playing' appears in the November 2016 issue of the 'American String Teacher' journal.
